Pickleball History: I’m a Pickler!

 

(July 2022) I’ve been a little stunned—and delighted—by the sudden popularity of one of my favorite pastimes, a game with a funny name and strange terminology, such as, “dink,” “kitchen,” and “skinny singles.” I’m talking about pickleball. It’s best described as a mash up of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.

I’ve been a “Pickler,” as people obsessed with the game like me are known, for more than 50 years. Largely confined to the Pacific Northwest for decades, pickleball has now emerged as America’s fastest-growing sport. Learn more at https://gatesnot.es/3yZGslK

Stopped by RP Pickleball courts just now to chat with Molly Pengel and Miriam Pengel. Happy to hear they had over 70 players this morning on 12 courts, similar to the over 60 players we had at Finley on 6 courts.
Molly asked me to.post a thank you to all you wonderful people who have donated towards gift baskets for the upcoming Sonoma Wine Country Games Pickleball Tournament June 9-11 at Sunrise Park in Rohnert Park. Donations have been fabulous. Come see the action, beginning at 8 AM Friday, June 9.

Gary Koffler Ordered A Pickleball Paddle Set

 

Today, Gary Koffler, an old friend of mine, ordered this paddle set. It was the cheapest set I could find on Amazon. Over the upcoming weeks, I will attempt to help Gary get his pickleball journey going on the right track - virtually - through this journal.  

Back in the day, he was a pretty active tennis, ping pong and badminton player.

I contacted Gary a couple of weeks ago on Facebook after seeing this amazing photo of his permaculture-inspired rain garden.

Another night view of a dream come true.

My aquaponic and hydroponic systems are a central feature of a new, must-visit location in Sonoma County. The venue is open for the public to experience what 1890’s ranch life was like.

Visitors are greeted by a permaculture-inspired rain garden planted with fruit trees and edible plants. Kids get close up views of our cows, sheep, goats, chickens and now fish, all in the center of downtown Cotati.

The Sustainable Agriculture Greenhouse Environment (SAGE) showcases emerging technologies being used today to produce nutritious food for our growing population.

The ranch hosts morning tours, 10-11AM, every first Saturday of the month, weather permitting. We are located at 175 West Sierra Avenue in Cotati, CA. We also host workshops and schedule other events throughout the year.

If you’re not where you want to be, it’s your fault. Get better. It’s not anyone else’s or anything’s fault. Stop using the excuse that you don’t have a drilling partner, ball machine, time, or anyone “good enough” to practice with.

Get better.

Find a wall, ask your son, daughter, husband, or best friend to toss balls to you at the kitchen. Drive an hour, two hours, four hours, or a freakin day to the city that does have better players. (Read More)
