Topspin allows you to hit the ball harder and the spin causes the ball to spin or curve back into the court. This spin helps you to control the distance that the ball travels.
There are 4 controlling factors for ball placement: Spin, Pace, Height, and Angle.
This lesson is is on some of the reasons why you want to apply topspin. Any time that you hit the ball long or farther than you wanted the ball to travel, adding topspin would have shortened that distance. Of course the pace, or how hard you hit the ball, is a major factor as well.

I believe that at whatever your skill level is, your topspin drive should be a challenge to players in your skill level and often a winning shot against weaker players.
