Defending the Drive: Countering the 3rd Shot Drive - Three Best Strategies

Returning the Drive: Defending Against Powerful Shots in Pickleball Introduction (00:00) In this video, pickleball instructor Jesse Simon provides tips on how to defend against powerful drive shots from the baseline in pickleball. Simon explains when to let shots go, how to execute an effective punch volley, the difference between a punch volley and block volley, and key mechanics for both volleys. Let It Go (00:13)
Simon advises to let shots go if they have not descended yet and are head high with pace. This includes shots with heavy topspin from a low to high swing. As Simon says, "If you have to reach above your head to hit a drive it is likely out." Let these go rather than trying to return them.
Punch Volley (00:48)
Simon recommends using the punch volley as your primary method for defending drives. Aim to punch the ball down at your opponent's feet to force errors or keep them backing up. If you leave your punch volley high, it allows them to continue driving or their partner to poach. Use an ineffective punch volley and you'll be exploited by good drivers.
Floating Volleys (1:44)
Floating volleys against drives leads to disaster, according to Simon. A floated return invites your opponent to approach the net. Although this can be dangerous, it likely leads to them hitting a difficult running shot. Be ready to let their next drive go long or put away their pop-up.
Volley Mechanics (2:45)

  • Punch Volley: Stay in a low ready position with weight forward. No backswing - use a firm grip and closed paddle face to connect the ball out front without overextending.
  • Block Volley: Low ready position with weight forward. Meet and freeze the ball with a medium-light grip and open paddle face. Don't let the paddle wobble on contact.
Summary: In this pickleball lesson, Simon covered key strategies for defending against drives - knowing when to let shots go, using the punch volley to keep opponents back, avoiding floating returns, and proper mechanics on punch and block volleys. Mastering these techniques will help you control points when facing powerful drives.
